This Guy Made A Promise At Three Years Old To Marry A Girl, 20 Years Later He Does

For better or for worse, we all remember our first loves. My first came when I was around five years old, and involved a gift for my beloved at her birthday party; a bathroom ornament wrapped, for some reason, in fabric and sellotape. My mum intervened before I could leave the house with it, but to this day, I still wonder what would have happened if I'd been left to my own devices that day. I think that we would probably be married.

More often than not, those stories of preschool love are less the opening chapter to a timeless love story, and more an embarrassing anecdote your mother trots out every time you bring somebody new home to meet your parents. That's not the case, however, when it comes to Laura Scheel and Matt Grodsky. One of Matt's earliest memories was standing up in pre-school to declare his love for Laura, and 20 years later, it's become clear that three-year-old Matt was in no way messing around.

Laura and Matt met in preschool, and on their Instagram account The Way We Met, Matt told us about how the pair were inseparable as youngsters, and how he declared at an early age that they were going to get married.

"As kids, Laura taught me how to ride the swings, draw rolling hills, and the 'right way' to properly eat string cheese. We have fond memories of playing hide-and-go-seek, chasing after each other on the playground, and mischievously staying up during nap time."

Unfortunately, once the pair headed off to kindergarten, Laura and Matt lost touch, as many kids their age tend to do as they get used to new teachers, surroundings and friends. That is, until their freshman year of high school. Laura spotted Matt's name in the phone of a mutual friend, and straight away, a friend tried to set them up.

"I was hesitant to go out with him," Laura admitted, but within two weeks, the pair were happily in a relationship, and they stayed strong even as they went to different schools, not to mention colleges in different states. Things started to get serious, and one day in 2015, Matt took Laura on a trip to their preschool - the place where this whirlwind romance began - under the pretence of a picnic date to celebrate the end of their junior year of college.

"The whole car ride to the preschool she kept asking me why I seemed anxious. I kept checking my pocket when she wasn’t looking to make sure the ring was still there. I dropped down on one knee while my brother came in with the phone, snapping photos. Laura was shocked. I gave her my pitch on why I wanted her to marry me and she said yes ― whew!"

These preschool sweethearts were engaged, and in December last year, they tied the knot in an adorable ceremony. In his Instagram post, Matt confirmed that he was "enamored with Laura as a child", and still is to this day. I mean, this might be the cutest love story I've ever heard - time to grab the tissues kids...
