The Incredibly Strict Diet Tom Brady And Gisele Bündchen Follow Every Day

The Superbowl is where athletes come to do one of two things: fail or cement their status as sporting legends. And none of have done the later more so than Tom Brady, 41, who led the New England Patriots to their sixth Superbowl win last night. The quarterback is now one of the NFL's greatest players of all time, begging the following question: how has he done it?

Despite being well into middle age - a time at which many athletes are beginning to think about retirement - Brady is still very much at the top of his game, showing that athletes don't necessarily have an expiry date, say, past the age of 36; although many NFL players have done so much younger. And this is, in part, the result of his extremely strict diet.

Although it's no secret that sportspeople have to ensure that they give their bodies the right fuel, the majority of them have to do it alone, sitting back and tucking into a bowl of kale while the rest of their family enjoys a takeaway. But that's not the case for Brady, who gets the support he needs from wife Gisele Bündchen, 38, who maintains an equally strict diet.

Now, the couple's personal chef, Allen Campbell, has lifted the lid on what this truly admirable pair eat in a day. And like anyone who has a very stringent physique keep up, the pair's diet is just as controlled as, well, an NFL player's training!

While there is an increased awareness of the health benefits of plant-based diets, Brady and Bündchen still incorporate a fair amount of meat into their diets, but in strictly controlled portions - a 4:1 ratio of vegetables to meat in every meal.

This emphasis on the importance of veggies (as well as meat) is reflected in Bündchen's Instagram feed which gives her 15.2 million followers an insight into this power couple's remarkably strict (but successful) diet.

"So, 80 percent of what they eat is vegetables," Campbell revealed, adding that when he cooks for the pair, he does so using "the freshest vegetables."

"If it's not organic, I don't use it. And whole grains: brown rice, quinoa, millet, beans. The other 20 percent is lean meats: grass-fed organic steak, duck every now and then, and chicken. As for fish, I mostly cook wild salmon. It's very different than a traditional American diet."

But what about if the couple has a hard day? I hear you ask. Sure, their life is swell, but as we all know, even the world's most successful people have their struggles - the majority of which are kept out of the public eye.

When this does happen, instead of calling for a takeaway or rushing down to the local store to seek the company of Ben and Jerry, Brady and Bündchen opt for a much healthier, but still satisfying comfort food.

"I'm all about serving meals in bowls," Campbell said. "I just did this quinoa dish with wilted greens. I use kale or Swiss chard or beet greens. I add garlic, toasted in coconut oil. And then some toasted almonds, or this cashew sauce with lime curry, lemongrass, and a little bit of ginger. That's just comfort food for them."

Even in the age of quick-fix energy drinks like Red Bull and Monster, the pair haven't been tempted to let loose when they're getting hydrated. According to Campbell, they start their days with the healthiest of tipples - hot water and lemon.

The couple then keeps themselves hydrated by eating lots of green vegetables and vegetable juices like coconut water. And if Bündchen's Instagram account is anything to go by, aside from having a penchant for avocado and toast, they get their vegetable juices straight from the source. This coconut certainly looks a lot more appetizing than a can of Red Bull!

So, if you're looking to get healthier, or know someone who dreams of NFL superstardom, you might want to take a leaf out of Brady and Bündchen's strict diets. Sure, this must be hard to stick do, but they're a lot healthier than most people, and Brady's NFL career, if nothing else, is a testament to the fact that with the right fuel in your engine, you can do anything!
