Spicy food is difficult to get right. Sometimes you get the ‘extra hot’ only to be disappointed you didn’t bat an eye, but then other times you order something that you expect to just tickle your mouth and you find yourself running around begging for water or yoghurt. Super embarrassing when you’re on a date but, at least they can see our ambitious side.
Thai cuisine usually does spice right, and a dish that balances heat with freshness and taste well is pad Thai. When you’re in the mood, a pad Thai can’t be beaten, it’s versatile and healthy (kind of). Most importantly it goes really well with any level of spice.
Logan Doan is a man with a stupidly high tolerance for spicy food- or so he thinks. Last week, the Jacksonville Florida resident took a trip to the Hawkers Asian Street Fare while on his lunch break for something a little different. He ordered a simple pad Thai from a vendor there and requested that the chefs make it extra spicy.
The request was taken pretty seriously. What he received in return was a carton covered with drawings of flames and inside was a tub of noodles topped with a veritable mound of pepper flakes. Quite frankly, the dish looked like a gastrointestinal death sentence.
Doan took to Reddit (going by the username Lowghen) and shared a photo of the receipt he received from the lunch stall and it makes for a hilarious read. The receipt is emblazoned with the word “Spicy” an eye-watering 17 times.
The receipt was topped off with the phrase in all caps “MAKE HIM REGRET BEING BORN.” The “*Spec prep*” between the two sections of the sentence makes the pettiness from the stall even funnier.
The thread on Reddit has stories from daredevils like Doan who have tried, and failed, to stomach similar orders. Doan himself even joked that he asked the chef to make him a low key suicide attempt.
One user, sfgeek, recounts hallucinating after ordering his pad Thai with a Thai Spicy level of heat from the dish saying, “it was so hot my friend had to help me to the car.” Another user brought up a thread from several weeks ago where an Australian user asked for an extra-piquant pho that made him physically ill.
It seems like Doan fared considerably better than the other bold gourmands, claiming that he felt just peachy after eating his lunch. Speaking to Kansas City Star Doan said: “Some folks in my office thought I was crazy for eating it, but I didn’t really get a rush from it.”
One thing is for sure, he certainly didn’t regret being born after eating it. At least the stall tried. If anything I’m quite jealous a restaurant went to those kinds of lengths to personalize an order, I’m usually misheard and given no spice at all when I play with the order.
