Khloé Kardashian and 4 other celebrities that went vegetarian during their pregnancy

We’ve heard a lot of weird pregnancy cravings, especially from our celebrities – the more money you have the more eccentric they seem to be – but that doesn’t mean they can’t crave normal things like Popeye’s and In-N-Out. Case in point: Khloé Kardashian.

For the most part though, the expectant star of Revenge Body actually stayed away from chicken and meat, instead favoring a diet that focuses on vegetarian fare. The reason? In a post on her website, the pregnant reality star revealed: “Before pregnancy, I really only ate chicken or turkey — no pork, red meat, most fish, lamb, etc. But now, I find meat absolutely disgusting, LOL. Just the sight of it makes me nauseous.”

She continued: “I’ve become somewhat of a vegetarian during pregnancy, but not by choice. Now that I’m nearing the end of my pregnancy, it doesn’t repulse me as much anymore. I wonder how I’ll feel about meat after I give birth!” Khloé’s no dolt when it comes to health, so it’s not surprising that her pregnancy diet is thought to be totally safe. The Kardashian is not the only one who’s stuck to a mostly plant-based diet with a bun in the oven. Alongside the celebs below, she’s in good company

1. Natalie Portman

The Black Swan star typically sticks to a vegan diet, but went vegetarian during her first pregnancy in 2011. The reason? Cravings. “I actually went back to being vegetarian when I became pregnant, just because I felt like I wanted that stuff. I was listening to my body to have eggs and dairy and that sort of stuff.” She added: “I know there are people who do stay vegan. But I think you have to just be careful, watch your iron levels and your B12 levels and supplement those if there are things you might be low in in your diet.”

2. Alicia Silverstone

Author of The Kind Diet (a book that has received mixed reviews), Alicia Silverstone opted to remain vegan during her pregnancy. She has been happy to share a lot of queries people have had with the matter. For example, on breast milk, she says: “Vegan mothers should make sure they have a reliable source of Vitamin D (sun exposure, fortified foods, or talk to a healthcare provider about supplementation) and iodine (iodized salt does the trick) in the mother’s diet while breastfeeding as well.”

3. Alyssa Milano

The actress eats a vegetarian diet when she’s not pregnant, and stuck to it when she had a bun in the oven. She told People that her cravings didn’t veer far off the foods she normally has a hankering for, which include broccoli and pizza. You too could be a real maverick, and put broccoli on your pizza. Go figure.

4. Carrie Underwood

The country crooner typically sticks to a mostly vegan diet, but followed more of a vegetarian regime during her pregnancy. “I am definitely going more on the vegetarian side, but as soon as I am not pregnant anymore I will go back to being vegan,” she told Yahoo Beauty back in 2014.

According to Fit Pregnancy, a pregnant woman who eschews meat will still get the vitamins, proteins, and minerals that she and her little one need — just so long as she doesn’t deprive herself of too much. The magazine advises eating a diet that’s rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes.

Adding dairy gives a welcome boost of protein, and Vitamin D. Plus, taking a daily prenatal vitamin will help provide vitamin B12, which typically comes from animal and fortified foods. If you feel so inclined to a takeout or two, don’t deprive yourself. The same goes for the non-pregnant too. If in doubt, always seek a medical professional.
