KFC have had a number of imaginative and (let’s be honest) bonkers marketing stunts over the years, from bath bombs that smell like fried chicken to a sandwich made from meteorite. Yet this latest idea is likely to drive people wild, given how many love the gravy option on the KFC menu as it is.
Inspired by the growing trend of ‘stocktails (craft cocktails with a mix of broth and booze), KFC is now making your weirdest dreams come true by creating three new cocktail recipes out of their trademark gravy. These kinds of drinks can be found in specialist bars across the world, but now KFC is bringing them to the masses with three classic cocktails: The Gravy Mary, The Finger Lickin’ Sour and The Southern Twist.
“Our fans repeatedly express their love for our gravy, which always sparks ideas within the team,” Marion Racine, marketing manager at KFC UK & Ireland, said. “We know our gravy is good enough to drink – so with stocktails being a real hit at the moment, what better ingredient to take them to the next level?”
Patrick, an expert mixologist, claims that the key was finding the right flavors and ingredients that complimented the taste of KFC gravy – which is no easy feat. “For example, the Kentucky bourbon in The Southern Twist brings mellow, sweet spice notes to stand up against the savoury gravy,” he explained. “The herbal note of parsley on the rim brightens the sip with the brown sugar softening the kick of bourbon and uniting the flavours.”
If you were hoping they’d be selling these in store, you’ll be disappointed – it will be a long time before we see alcohol in fast food joints like KFC. But you can always grab a pot of gravy and try out one of these recipes:
The Gravy Mary
First you need a spice mix – add three drops of Tabasco sauce, 20ml Worcester sauce, 3 grinds white pepper, a pinch of celery salt and a pinch of paprika to a tall glass. Add half a teaspoon of horseradish cream, cover firmly and shake. Next, add the mix to 50ml vodka, pouring in 15ml fresh lemon juice and 90ml tomato juice, then mix again. This is when you add the KFC Gravy (20ml), stir it all together and pour it into a highball glass. To finish up, add some celery and a small skewer of popcorn chicken. If you’re looking for a non-alcoholic version, use the same quantities as above but with 140ml of tomato juice.
The Finger Lickin’ Sour
Pour 100ml of the KFC Gravy into a tall glass alongside 400ml mezcal, cover firmly and shake. Place the glass in the freezer for three hours. Once frozen, pour the gravy-infused mezcal through a strainer and clean cloth into another glass. Add 25ml fresh lemon juice to the glass, along with 10ml orange marmalade, a pinch of salt and pepper, and one egg white, before shaking again. Pour the whole thing into a martini glass and sprinkle with thyme and you’re done!
The Southern Twist
First, you need to create a parsley and brown sugar rim. Chop four teaspoons worth of parsley and mix it with two teaspoons of granulated brown sugar in a bowl, coat the rim of a rocks glass with lemon juice, and dip the rim of the glass into the parsley sugar mixture. The drink itself is simple: Add ice cubes and 50ml of Kentucky Bourbon to the glass, and 60ml of fresh hot KFC Gravy, along with two grinds of black pepper. Give it all a mix and enjoy!
Fancy giving one of these a try? I’m a little hesitant in all honesty, but part of me wants to try it just to know.
