9 Foods You Really Should Steer Clear From When You’re Drunk

Sort of stating the obvious here, but there are going to be times where you will be pretty drunk. And that's totally fine (in moderation of course), because although alcohol tends to get a bad rap in the media, it's actually a very useful "tool". It can boost your mood when you're not feeling particularly outgoing or sociable, it helps you to lose some of those pesky inhibitions and it can lead to you and your pals creating some pretty unforgettable memories together.

You've also probably heard that eating before you drink or while you're drinking is a good idea as it slows down the absorption of alcohol. However, what you may not have known is that there are a number of foods you should try to avoid eating when you've had quite a bit to drink.

From reasons ranging from additional dehydration to increased digestive issues, here are nine foods you should steer clear of when you're wasted (and sadly, they're the foods you're most likely to eat whilst drunk).

1. Fries

Who doesn't enjoy indulging in a portion of fries on a night out? For some of my friends, it's practically guaranteed. But unfortunately, according to New York-based dietician Keri Glassman, fries contain a lot of salt, which can dehydrate you even further, making that hangover the morning over so much worse.

2. Pretzels

Pretzels are a pretty tempting snack food to reach for when you're intoxicated. But unfortunately for you and your cravings, salty snacks make you thirsty which could mean you end up drinking way more alcoholic beverages than you can handle.

3. Chocolate

Let's face it, you're more likely to stuff your face with chocolates when you've have had a few too many drinks. But when you drink and eat chocolate, the fat, caffeine, and cocoa can go onto cause some gastro issues, usually triggered by acidic foods.

4. Homemade dishes that involve a stove

You should avoid any foods that require cooking on a stove. Open flames can be dangerous when you're under the influence. If you really want a nice, cooked meal, it's best to find a 24-hour diner, or stick the microwaving leftovers.

5. Liquor-laced desserts

While it might seem like quite a nice idea to dig into a boozy dessert after a load of drinks with your main meal, it's actually a pretty bad idea! And that's because you never know just how much alcohol it actually contains, particularly in sauces where alcohol doesn't burn off.

In addition, consuming other milk-based desserts can prevent chemical reactions that irritate your liver when under the influence.

6. Oranges

There's no denying that oranges are healthy, but unfortunately, the acid in oranges and other citrus fruits can go on to cause digestive problems. If you do feel like eating a piece of fruit when you're smashed, try a banana instead. They're high in potassium meaning they can help undo the dehydration that alcohol causes.

7. Candy

Like salty snacks, sweet foods can make you a lot thirstier and thus a lot more likely to drink more and more alcohol.

8. Hot sauce

Spicy foods that make you feel a bit queasy when you're sober will really mess with your system when you're wasted. Keep well away.

9. Marinara pizza

Although pizza might sound tempting when you've had a few too drink, it's definitely not the best idea. Booze tends to loosen up the muscles that keep your food and digestive juices down. Also, acidic tomatoes found in marinara sauce, salsa and hot sauce can provoke acid reflux, GERD, and heartburn.

The effects are especially bad if you consume them just before you go to bed as gravity will stop helping you keep your food down. White pizza is much less likely to cause you any further sickness. That is, if it's not too greasy as excess fat can also mess with your stomach.
