Breakfast. As the ad campaigns always say, it’s the most important meal of the day. But in the fast-paced world of adult life, it can be nearly impossible to put together the kind of breakfast you’d have on the weekend, and in a rush to catch that bus or beat the traffic, we often skip it entirely.
Needless to say, it’s definitely not a good thing to be skipping the first meal of the day, and not just because you miss out on that initial burst of energy that’ll last you all the way through to supper. No – there are some genuine side effects that come with missing out on breakfast. Here they are now for your reading pleasure.
1. Your heart suffers
A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) says that men who skip breakfast on a regular basis see their risk of sustaining a heart attack increase by 27 percent. Scary stuff. Study lead Dr. Leah Cahill says the effects may not be this pronounced in practice, but suggests that indulging in that healthy breakfast is good for your cardiovascular health all the same.
2. You’re at a higher risk for diabetes
Ladies and gentlemen, here at Food Envy, we’re not big fans of diabetes. We should all do our best to minimize our risk of the disease, and one way to do that is to eat breakfast regularly. This comes about via a study from Harvard University School of Public Health, who interviewed more than 46,000 women over six years to find out the relation between their eating habits and their overall health. Women who skipped breakfast showed a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, and working women were as high as 54 percent more likely to develop the illness.
3. You could gain weight
If, like many people out there, you’re looking to lose weight, skipping breakfast is a bad way to avoid packing on the pounds. You might think that skipping out on breakfast would be a great way to cut down on your calorie intake, but unfortunately, this comes with its fair share of side-effects. By skipping breakfast, you in fact ramp up your desire for sugary and fatty foods, so when you eventually do get to eat, you eat a lot more than you should, resulting in you potentially exceeding your calorie intake.
4. It will affect your mood
Let’s be honest: when you tuck into some delicious bacon and eggs, you feel a lot better about life in general than if you stumble into work, hurriedly make a coffee and try to get through the day on an empty stomach. This is natural, but it has a lot to do with how eating breakfast controls your energy levels. A 1999 study from the British journal Physiological Behavior revealed that after overnight fasting, those who don’t eat anything at all performed worst on games involving memory skill, and showed the most signs of fatigue.
5. It could increase your risk of cancer
At some point in all of our lives, it’s very likely that we or someone we know will be diagnosed with cancer in its various guises. A report from Cancer Research UK says that one of the leading causes of cancer (apart from smoking) is obesity, and by skipping breakfast, you adversely affect your calorie intake later in the day, making it more likely for your BMI to soar.
6. It can be a real headache
Are your mornings constantly permeated by sharp pains in your head? Turns out, this isn’t because your boss is constantly on your back and stress is starting to take over. Well, not entirely. Skipping breakfast can also be a massive factor in the prevalence of migraines, and it has to do with a little thing called hypoglycemia, which is a fancy way of saying “your blood sugar’s low”. By skipping meals, you trigger a massive dip in your blood sugar levels, causing your body to release certain hormones into your system, raising your blood pressure as a result. That increased pressure in your head causes your migraine, and the effect is most pronounced when you skip breakfast, as by doing so, you’re often not eating for as long as 12 hours.
7. You could even lose your hair
Is your hair looking a little thin recently? If so, massaging your scalp and using certain shampoos could help, but it’s definitely worth eating breakfast on a regular basis. As you might know, your hair is largely made of a protein called keratin, and without enough protein of your own in your body, keratin levels will drop, causing your hair to stop growing, and possibly causing it to fall off. To stop that from happening, you’re going to need a nice, healthy, protein-rich breakfast. Perhaps this one.
