Love it or hate it, caffeine is everywhere look, even when you don’t think so. From the foods we eat to the drinks we can’t seem to start our morning without, caffeine has become a staple of the American diet.
“But internet article, only coffee and energy drinks have caffeine. Where are these other sources of caffeine you talk about? I want to try some, give them to me, I need it!” I hear you cry. Jackie Arnett Elnahar, registered dietitian and co-founder and CEO of TelaDietitian, says that depending on the brand, some food and beverages can have quite a bit of caffeine – even as much as coffee (which is around 95 milligrams of caffeine). Have a look for yourself.
1. Protein and energy bars
Arnett said protein and energy bars, which many of us eat on a daily basis, can have close to the same amount of caffeine as coffee. “Depending on the brand and flavor, they can range from no caffeine to 75 milligrams of caffeine, especially if it’s a mocha or coffee-flavored bar.”
Chocolate is known to have quite a bit of caffeine. The darker it is, the higher the cocoa content and the more caffeine it has. Arnett explains that while these sweet treats do not have as much caffeine as coffee, they still pack quite a punch. “One small square of Ghiradelli dark chocolate (.44 ounce) has 14 milligrams of caffeine.” It will only take a few to get you to a full cup’s worth.
3. Black tea
If you’re fond of black tea, I’m sorry to say that your favorite cup has anywhere from 25-48 milligrams of caffeine. Arnett says: “all it takes is two cups of this brew and your caffeine content has just surpassed that of a cup of coffee.”
Usually, if you aren’t drinking coffee for the energy, you’re drinking soda. Some soda fans will consume as many as four or five cans of the sweet stuff each day. And when you consider that the average can of soda has anywhere from 22-115 milligrams of caffeine, it’s no wonder that they’d feel pumped up.
5. Ice cream
One place you might not have considered looking for caffeine is in your freezer. If you like your ice cream flavored with coffee, get ready to add some extra caffeine to your day. Coffee flavored ice cream can have 29 milligrams of caffeine per four-ounce serving. Maybe avoid this flavor on movie night.
Now, there’s no excuse for a mid-afternoon slump. Be warned though: too much coffee can do just as much harm as it can good and, as usual, make sure you’re drinking coffee and eating caffeinated products as part of a balanced diet.
