When it comes to cuisine, America tries to live up to the adage “bigger is better”, but is that always the case? Some American concoctions, whilst very tasty when you take that initial bite, combine one too many components and leave you wishing you just went for a salad.
Some are fast food concoctions that combine a variety of USA favorites, while others are variations on ethnic dishes that Americans have made their own. Chances are, you still love one of these delicious treats.
1. Wendy’s Baconator
This one is for the carnivores. The Wendey’s Baconator proves that bigger is better, with two beef patties and six strips of bacon. Not a single veggie to get in the way.
2. Corn Dogs
Corn dogs are a food only Americans could have invented, and are a staple at fairs. Some would question if you even went to the fair if you didn’t take a picture of a corndog there.
3. McDonald’s McGriddle
The McDonald’s McGriddle is a combination of all America’s favorite breakfast foods all sandwiched into a delicious English muffin.
4. Cinnabon rolls
One of America’s favorite indulgences. Who else can relate to that episode of the Simpsons where Homer rolls Cinnabon rolls straight into his mouth?
5. Chick-Fil-A sandwich
The classic Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich. Who else really craves one, on the day you can’t actually buy one?
6. Krispy Kreme burger
I will never forget the first time I saw one of these. I thought to myself: “this shouldn’t be allowed!” It is, and it’s amazing.
A good steak is the ultimate indulgence anywhere in the world, but particularly in the US of A.
8. KFC’s Double Down
Anything on KFC’s menu could have made this list, but the Double Down is the ultimate creative combination of American classics: fried chicken, cheese and bacon.
It might be Italian, but Americans have honed the craft of pizza-making well enough to stake a claim to it as their own. Whether you agree or disagree, you can’t take Chicago Deep Dish away from them.
10. Sub sandwich
Whatever your chosen fillings, all Americans can agree: it’s a foot-long, or bust.
11. Cheese curds
Enjoyed primarily in the midwest, Americans from all over find themselves craving these from time to time.
12. Chili cheese dogs
Foot-long chili cheese dogs are an American staple, whether you get them from Sonic, a hot dog stand or food truck.
13. Banana split
A banana split is one of America’s favorite desserts. Sparkles are optional, but a proper split has to be made, in my opinion.
Not just regular salads in general, you know the ones I’m talking about: the “healthy” ones, that with a wedge of iceberg lettuce covered in creamy dressing and bacon. Delicious.
15. Buffalo wings
As a starter, main course or leftovers you eat from the fridge in the middle of the night, buffalo chicken wings pretty much define “American food”. Don’t forget your blue cheese sauce.
There are a few honerable mentions I’ve missed out (french fries, chicken and waffles etc), but I can’t fit them all in, sorry. Besides, deciding what I’m going to have for lunch is hard enough already. I don’t need that extra stress.
